Other reasons have been suggested as well: "If they [the immigrants] were moved by anything it was their own drive to escape the boundaries of colonialism, allied to a unique combination of historical circumstances, the most important of which was to do with the logistics of travel" (Phillips, p. 46). In 1948, the government adopted the British Nationality Act, which ascribed British citizenship to the United Kingdom, its colonies, and newly independent Commonwealth countries such as India, which had gained independence from Britain the previous year, in 1947.

At that point in the 1980s, Kay's work had only appeared in anthologies. In common with Grace Nichols (b. 1950 Guyana), Kay's early work points to a need to recognize and assert the specificity of black women's experiences.
