Anglicans caught in the intellectual and religious confusion between experiential necessities and outmoded norms looked about for new light on their problems. Honest men simply could not engage in trade without borrowing and lending capital at interest; they could not grow wool without enclosing common land and abridging some of the traditional privileges of the peasantry; they could not engage in competitive trade without making up by high profits the losses they sustained in bad ventures.
