The longer and thinner a needle is, the more difficult it is to insert. The use of injection cannulas for acupuncture entails risks and should therefore be avoided. In acupuncture, the needles remain in the tissue for some time before they are removed. Injection cannulas are stiff, as a result of which they can easily damage the tissue when the patient moves and are more likely to break under strain. Furthermore, they have a lumen, which increases the risk of contaminants entering. In human acupuncture, we also see needles used with small tubes.

Special caution is also required in the area of the thorax. Inserting the needle too deeply can cause a pneumothorax. The same holds true for the back transport points in this area. Avoid damaging blood vessels and nerve tissue. In the area of the lower abdomen, there is a risk of accidentally puncturing the urinary bladder if it is very full. Other abdominal organs can also be injured with a needle that is too long, especially when they are enlarged. De Qi To achieve a therapeutic effect, acupuncture has to set energies in motion.
