Many law enforcement agencies prefer a passive alert to prevent disturbance of a crime scene where an active alert may disturb the area. Examples of types of indications are: • Active—digging; barking • Passive—sitting; lying down Once you select a behavior, stick with it. Nothing confuses a dog more than the handler changing the parameters during training. The trained alert must be consistently repeatable, and the handler must be able to articulate the dog’s indication to others. ” You must be able to describe the reaction.

A canine/handler team that has had scent training performs better. Also, the handler will be familiar with “reading” the dog’s body language. Training begins by introducing the scent and developing commitment to locate the source. Then the dog is taught to give an easily identifiable indication to the handler that it has located the source; this is termed the trained alert. Once the team is working well together, the source is hidden above ground, hung and buried. During training, the team works on problems that become larger and more realistic.

Repeat the exercise 10–15 times, then give the dog a break. Then repeat for another rotation of 10–15 repetitions. After a couple of sessions the trained alert will begin to occur automatically. ” The dog should again indicate the block. Now you wait for the behavior to occur naturally. Once the dog has confirmed, start to count to 10 silently. This gives the dog 10–15 seconds to perform the trained alert on its own. If the behavior does not occur, once you finish the count, immediately cue it.
