The syllable sant is a reasonable cognate for both the French and English saint, and san literally suggests the Spanish san, as in San Francisco. According to the OED, sant historically has been a rather common Indo-European spelling for saint, as in Old Frisian, Medieval Dutch, and Medieval High German. Babette can be regarded both as the diminutive form of Elizabeth in French-speaking culture and as the diminutive of Barbara (cf. Babs) in Englishspeaking culture. Although Babette Hersant was French, other contextual elements suggest the English meaning instead of the French for the nickname in this story.

As was true of the racial conflict, this conflict between males is one-sided. Because of Olaf’s age and low social position, Jim does not have any interest in Olaf beyond acknowledging that he deserves, as a human being and as an elderly person, to be treated with decency.
